22 is a weird age to be in.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean this in a weird way. And while some of us might be feeling it (ehem, Taylor Swift), there is a lingering thought at the back of our heads that we are on very different phases in our lives. After graduating from college, some of us might pursue further education and take Masters, some might establish their professional careers, while some might decide to get married and build their own family.

For many, it marks the end of a structured academic environment and the beginning of a new chapter filled with independence, career challenges, and personal growth. While it can be exciting to navigate new paths, it also involves adjusting to new responsibilities, redefining social circles, and finding one’s place in the world.

Navigating the job market can be overwhelming, especially in a competitive economy where securing a position in your field of study is not guaranteed. Compared to classes and exams, having a job also means being bestowed with a bigger responsibility with less flexibility. Many graduates also face the reality of student loan repayments, rent, bills, and other living expenses on an entry-level salary. Thus, proper time and money management is crucial during this time.

In addition, many graduates experience post-graduation blues. The end of college means the dissolution of the familiar social networks built over the past few years. As friends move to different cities, it becomes difficult to get in touch, and the sense of community and comfort campus life once offered can be difficult to replicate in a new environment. But for a good number of people, whenever they meet their friends, there is an added sense of pressure as one feels like they are lagging compared to their peers in a race called life and they need to keep up.

While there is a significant number of challenges in life after college, these are accompanied by numerous opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Graduating from college opens the door to a world of possibilities. The transition to adulthood encourages personal and professional growth – we have the opportunity to try out different roles and industries to discover what truly aligns with passions and strengths while taking the time to develop a strong sense of identity. The freedom that comes with adulthood allows us to make our own choices and take accountability for each choice we make.

Ultimately, life after college is about building a meaningful and fulfilling life on one’s own terms – one without any comparison or basis relative to another’s pace. We continue to build our own stories as the main author of our life’s work. While the transition to life after college can be challenging, it is also a time of immense growth and opportunity. By approaching this new chapter with a positive mindset, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to personal and professional development, graduates can navigate the complexities of adulthood and build a life that is both rewarding and meaningful.
